Patients Stopping Slimming Medications Regain Pounds Far More Rapidly Than Dieters

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis reveals that patients who stop using blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Findings released in a prominent medical journal points out that while overweight individuals can lose a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"People using such treatments need to be aware of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the medication ends," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery suggests a reversion to original mass within about a year and a half.

Analyzing Treatments

The research, which looked at dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the results of the injectable medications with older methods.

Researchers emphasize that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally have a less rapid creep back—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Explaining the Quick Regain

Doctors suggest the way of the jabs explains the amplified weight return.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Condition?

Medical guidelines suggest the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts say that, given the high risk of relapse, the therapy is often ongoing.

This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "emphasize the chronic character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Testimonies

People who have discontinued the jabs report a sudden resurgence of appetite.

"I experienced a switch flipping and you become extremely hungry," recalled a patient.

The struggle is compounded if patients have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Growing Use

Recent estimates show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest being substantial.

  • Adoption is more common among females than men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, researchers stress that while these medications are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits hinges on ongoing lifestyle support.
