In excess of 20 Olympic medal winners, trainers and additional global sports figures have endorsed a statement demanding a stop to the death penalty of a champion boxer and instructor, who is sentenced to die in Iran.

Growing Global Anger

Amidst growing international outrage over Iran’s expanding employment of executions as a means of oppression, the strongly worded appeal denounces the Iranian regime's decision to confirm the capital punishment of the athlete.

The athlete, 30, from the city in the northern province, was taken into custody for being involved in countrywide demonstrations in the year 2019 and indicted of aiding an opposition group. He has endured five years in detention, where he has been abused and held in seclusion.

“Sport is designed to encourage faith, unity, and bravery,” the signatories stated. “The execution of a champion for his political views is a direct assault on these ideals and a caution to every athlete who ventures to speak out.

Record of Putting to Death Athletes

The statement pointed out that Vafaei Sani’s case was not unique and underscored the country's record of executing athletes for their views, such as Habib Khabiri, skipper of the national football team, and a women's sports leader, captain of the national women’s volleyball team. In two thousand twenty, Navid Afkari, a young national competitor, was also executed.

Further endorsers to the statement comprise a yachting pioneer, who captained the first women's squad in a round-the-world competition and was the first woman to receive a renowned nautical honor; the former skipper of the national squad Craig Foster; and a footballer, who was in the national team for the international competition.

Detention and Unfair Trial

Vafaei Sani was arrested in the spring of 2020. The allegations against him entailed “spreading corruption on Earth through fire-setting and ruin of public property”. His sentence has been annulled twice but on the fourth of October it was maintained on the latest review. His court case was criticized as “deeply biased” by advocates and organizations.

Urging to United Nations

The appeal to stop the boxer's death sentence follows a previous appeal to the global human rights chief for freedoms, endorsed by in excess of one hundred advocates and groups, calling for measures to stop the sports figure's execution.

Execution Crisis

As per data, there is an “death penalty surge in Iran, which has attained alarming dimensions”. In the year 2023, authorities put to death at least over 850 people – a nearly half rise on the previous year. In the prior period, data showed 972 deaths, constituting the maximum count since 2015. More than eight hundred people have been executed so far in 2025.

Political prisoners and dissidents are focus, especially in the aftermath of the 2022 protests. Analysts say the government have employed the capital punishment to quell protest, generate apprehension among the population and tighten their control on rule.
