Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Comments

The English opener Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of comments from captain Stokes about the team environment as no place for "weak men".

Stokes delivered those words in several interviews in the wake of England's loss in the second Ashes series versus Australia earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where England are staring at defeat with a match to spare, Stokes stated he had allowed his sentiment to "circulate freely" within the squad.

"I've done the necessary discussions in recent days that I required," remarked the England leader.

However, following the opener scored a knock of 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take anything stated in the media with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

The captain issued his "weak men" observation subsequent to England were beaten in Brisbane to go two matches behind.

The England squad afterwards took a holiday to Noosa in the gap between the second and the upcoming matches.

Before the Adelaide contest, he revealed his players had held "raw" conversations and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to remain alive in the Ashes battle.

Yet, the Kent batsman stated the guidance from the captain and head coach Brendon McCullum had stayed consistent with their previous three years in leadership.

"It's been extremely upbeat, the same as always," said Crawley. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with great liberty. It felt like we could do an extraordinary feat going into this game."

The Hosts Close of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal on day four came during a crucial three-wicket burst by Australia spinner Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Stokes himself – left the chasing side six down for 207 chasing a daunting target of 435.

This means, the home team require four wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an insurmountable 3-0 advantage after three matches played.

A loss would prolong the English team's drought in this country to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth straight overseas Ashes defeat.

This series is set to be decided in only eleven days of play – after England losing the first two Tests in two and four days each.

The last time 1921, when Australia sealed victory in England in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been determined more swiftly. Australia have also won in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disheartening," said the batsman. "We came here to regain the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel at this point."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we will definitely view it like that," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been tough. Australia is a very, very good team. It was always going to be hard touring here to face them. They entered as the favourites coming in to it they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Place In Question

Although Crawley's performance in the third Test probably answers questions about his immediate place in the England team, Ollie Pope looks under threat for his position in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

Pope fell for 17 runs in the team's second knock on Saturday, adding to his poor record against Australia.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has never made a half-century and averages just 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman since 1900 – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top order in the Ashes and returned a lower average.

But, the opener said any notion his teammate is under the microscope originates with "the media" – meaning the press – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," added Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year if I'm honest."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is talk from the outside. There is no chat of that nature regarding Pope in the camp," Crawley concluded.
