British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a joint strike against an underground arms cache in Syrian territory operated by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the UK's MoD.

The location, identified by intelligence, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was located in mountainous terrain just north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets used Paveway IV guided bombs to target a number of approach shafts providing entry to the depot... early reports suggest the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the strike late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - referred to as ISIS - imposed extremist governance over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation demonstrates the UK's leading role, and commitment to operate in unison with our allies, to eradicate any resurgence of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary John Healey remarked.

British military aircraft have carried out patrols over Syrian airspace to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State after its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank the personnel of our armed forces involved in this strike for their expertise and their courage," Healey added. "They were among numerous British personnel deployed over the holidays. This operation, to remove terrorist threats who pose a risk to our way of life, shows how British military are prepared to act, throughout the year, protecting the UK within its borders and powerful internationally."

In December, the United States armed forces executed what it described as a "massive strike" against Daesh sites in Syria, following an ambush claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations estimates Daesh still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in Syria and Iraq.
